Alternative livelihoods

In this session, we will be hosting the 5th pair of the 2023 NileWell Journalist- Scientist Coproduction Fellowship Program, Christopher Bendana and Daniel Abowe from Uganda.

Daniel Abowe, a Project Officer at Uganda National Council of Science and Technology collaborated with Christopher Bendana an award-winning multimedia freelance journalist to co-produce different communication outputs on providing alternative livelihoods to promote conservation.

In this session, the pair illuminate the factors contributing to Uganda's wetland loss of up to 40% over the last 20 years and explain how the Ministry of Water and Environment is partnering with local cooperatives to build alternative livelihoods in protected areas.

Are the intervention methods sufficient? Can they be replicated in other Nile Basin countries?
