Increasing food production during dry season through farmer led irrigation

Cabbages growing in an irrigated farm
Water is an important element in agriculture. The majority of small-scale farmers highly depend on rainwater to sustain food production on their farms. This is a risk factor that is a challenge to most farmers, especially horticulture, when there is a rain shortage, considering some parts of Kenya receives 1 to 2 rainy seasons while most of its land is ASAL. Farmers in the country have faced further challenges brought on by climate change and inflation during the Covid-19 pandemic. Small-scale farmer-led irrigation is recommended to curb the minimal water supply challenge during dry seasons. SIGNIFICANCE This story aims at finding out how farmers in the country cope during low rainy seasons to supply water to their farms. It also seeks to report on how the government is supporting farmers through enhanced water infrastructure development to minimize over-dependence on rain-fed agriculture.
