Lake Tana feeds 60% of the Blue Nile, providing water for over 200 million people across Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. The lake is home to 28 fish species, 21 of which are endemic, with an annual commercial fish production value of approximately $1.1 million. Unfortunately, this iconic ecosystem is greatly endangered.
Yohannes Zerihun, Senior Ecohydrologist and Practicing Water Resources Engineer collaborated with Demise Mekuriyaw an award-winning news editor at the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, to co-produce different communication outputs on the restoration milestones and challenges.
In this session, the pair will enlighten us on the mounting threats to Lake Tana, including unchecked development, invasive species, and disregard for its fragile shoreline ecology. Moreover, they will share their coproduction findings on the efforts by residents, international and national stakeholders, and academic institutions to restore it alongside the mighty Nile River.
What is at stake for the future of Lake Tana and the communities relying on it?
