
Continental Guidelines for the use of biotechnology to enhance Agricultural Productivity for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa
Background and Scope:
• The Guidelines were developed on the basis of precautionary principle, which calls for transparency and public awareness.
• With the establishment of AfTFCA, the continent can expect an increase in trade related transboundary movement of agricultural commodities.
• Living/Genetically Modified Organisms (LMOs/GMOs) does require biosafety regulations.
• Harness of agri-biotech application (GM & GE crops) in Africa without compromising the biosafety integrity and regulations.
• Of note, countries are sovereign and may decide to or not to introduce GMOs in their countries.
